ISO 6346 owner codes are registered with the Bureau International des Containers (BIC) in Paris, France to ensure uniqueness worldwide.
For this reason they are often referred to as "BIC codes".
Within Europe, EN 13044 is the standard for the identification of Intermodal Loading Units (ILU's).
EN 13044 adopts the same identification scheme as ISO 6346, but uses a four character owner code without an equipment identifier. Currently A, B, D, E and K are used for this fourth character.
